Even after Nancy Mitchell survived breast cancer, underwent 14 extensive back surgeries, and was unable to stand, walk, or transfer herself from her wheelchair to the bed, she always knew she would win the battle and return home.

After years of chronic back pain and surgeries, it took her over three months of rehabilitation, but she has accomplished her goal and is going home.

It is that kind of spirit and courage that Donelson Place Care & Rehab, a Signature HealthCARE Community, celebrates during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. The week is designated to promote the value of rehabilitation, highlight the capabilities of people with disabilities, salute the professionals who provide service to people with disabilities and renew our nation’s commitment to fulfill the unmet needs of people with disabilities.

On May 16, 2013, three facilities from Signature HealthCARE’s Urban North segment took excitement to the top during National Nursing Home Week. Donelson Place Care & Rehab hosted the event in Nashville, along with Signature HealthCARE of Columbia and Signature HealthCARE of Clarksville. We had 15 residents ride in a hot air balloon and they were so excited to have this once in a lifetime experience.

Donelson Place Care & Rehab has implemented a new program that allows our residents to ‘visit’ a new city, state or country each month. They try an activity, get to taste foods, see photography, and experience virtual tours through videos, YouTube and more. It has been very successful and fun!!

So far, we have visited Hawaii, Mexico and France.

Residents at Donelson Place Care & Rehab in Nashville had a ball on Thursday night as they saw the Nashville Predators play the Canadian Calgary Flames at Bridgestone Arena. They were amazed by the crowd and began chanting the cheers along with everyone else. For many it was their first time at a professional sporting event.

On Friday, March 15, Donelson Place Care & Rehab hosted a happy hour complete with green pina coladas and a pot of gold scavenger hunt. We were so happy to have the Scott-Ellis School of Irish Dance, in Brentwood, Tenn., perform for us in our facility. The residents were so excited and impressed with their dance moves…a great time was had by all :)
